can you ever have enough pillows...we certainly don’t think so! at rug&weave we’re passionate about the power of handmade pillows!
Whether our pillows arrive assembled from artisans in Turkey and Morocco, or we create them ourselves sewing handmade textiles from Africa and Thailand, we can't get enough of how one remarkable pillow can spruce up any room. That being said, it's hard to know where to start when styling pillows, or how to choose eye catching pillow combos that don't overwhelm or confuse. With so much variation in size, colour, and texture, how do we style pillows? What do we consider? Turns out it's a lot easier than it seams...we just had to! Here are some tips from our team of pillow-enthusiasts to take your pillow game up a notch.
>> LET’S TALK COLOUR AND PATTERN
You should consider the room, what colours do you want to play off of? Picking one main colour palette, or choosing colours that compliment each other, will make your pillows feel like they belong together and with their surroundings. In terms of pattern, go bold or go home! A little secret, patterns CAN mix, just make sure the scales of the patterns are different. There should be variety in the size of the patterns, as well as their ‘loudness’.
>> BIG, MEDIUM, LITTLE, SQUARE, ROUND, RECTANGLE.. WHAT DO ALL THESE TRAITS HAVE IN COMMON WITH EACH OTHER? NOTHING, AND THAT’S THE POINT!
Layering pillows of different sizes and shapes adds so much visual interest and depth to your couch or bed. A general rule of thumb we use for styling a couch is placing two bigger square pillows in the corners (22” x 22”), followed by two smaller squares (20” x 20”), and a lumbar pillow in front. Pay attention to the size of the sofa though, you don’t want your pillows to look too tiny or too large!
PLAY AROUND WITH ASYMMETRICAL LOOKS, GROUPINGS OF ODD NUMBERED PILLOWS OFTEN LOOK MORE ATTRACTIVE THAN EVEN NUMBERS!
>> YOUR PILLOWS SHOULD FEEL AS GOOD AS THEY LOOK!
Don’t be afraid to incorporate different textures and fabrics. Pairing cotton with silk, or linen with woven fabric breaks up the complete uniformity of a pillow grouping, generating interest and flare! Different textures scream “touch me”, and you want to invite this feeling in your living space!
>> LET’S NOT FORGET ABOUT THE MOST IMPORTANT CONSIDERATION WHEN STYLING PILLOWS, PRACTICALITY AND COMFORT!
If you have to remove a mountain of pillows overtime you want to sit on the couch, chair, or bed, you may have too many! I can't believe we just said that, buttttt it's true!
At the end of the day, don’t be afraid to swim against the current and try something new that reflects your own personal style! when it comes to your home, there are no hard and fast rules, just what feels right!
